Why Green Certification is Important

Green and green certification has become a hot topic amongst the business community.  Many wonder if it is important - will becoming certified help increase business, or is it just another fad. In fact, according to a Clearworks study titled Green Products and Services -- A Viewpoint from Consumers and Small and Medium Business, both consumers and small businesses expressed skepticism over “green” claims, and 50% said their doubts over “green” claims acted as a barrier to purchasing more “greenly”.

So, how does a business become certified?  How does a business avoid the mistake of green-washing?  According to the Green Business Bureau, becoming certified can be quite simple if you follow some simple rules during the selection process:
1.  Find a program that gives you credit for the sustainable work you are already doing
2.  Choose a tool that offers transparency - not only for you to show your customers, but also for them to show you
3.  Find a certification program that is easy to use
4.  Find a program that focuses on your businesses personal needs.  There can be quite a bit of cost savings when properly implemented.

Once you have successfully completed a green certification program, you should proudly display your seal and certificate on your storefront, your website, and any other area that is visible to customers.  This shows that you are socially conscious and concerned about the future of our planet.

The Green Business Bureau offers an easy and affordable way to earn your green certification.  Visit us at www.gbb.org and find out how!
